We are a large group of biologists researching the ecology and evolution of small fish called threespine stickleback. In 2019, we set up a massive experiment in Alaska studying how wild populations respond to novel environments on a scale never before achieved. Each year, we have multiple teams returning to Mat-Su Valley and Kenai Peninsula to collect scientific samples and data for the project to address unanswered questions in ecology and evolutionary biology.
In 2019, our team worked hard to restock nine lakes with a total of 10000+ threespine stickleback, a fish species native to Alaska. In conjugation with the restocking, we were able to set up an enormous natural experiment investigating how different ecotypes of sticklebacks adapt to new habitats.
The project has become a multi-disciplinary collaboration between experts in different areas of biology, ranging from aquatic ecology to genomics and behavioural ecology. Today, we are a large international group involving over 50 scientists from 22 different research groups across 17 universities and institutions.
